The University of Rhode Island women’s basketball The University of Rhode Island women’s basketball team is headed back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three decades after capturing its first Atlantic 10 tournament championship.

Top-seeded Rhode Island (28-4) edged second-seeded George Mason 53-51 Sunday at the Henrico Sports & Events Center in Virginia, completing a historic run through the conference tournament.

The title comes after the Rams secured their second Atlantic 10 regular-season championship in four years, but Sunday marked the program’s first-ever A-10 tournament crown, earning the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

URI opened tournament play in the quarterfinals March 6 against No. 8 Loyola Chicago, which advanced after defeating No. 9 St. Bonaventure 61-59.

The NCAA appearance will be Rhode Island’s first since the 1995-96 season, when the Rams went 21-8 before falling to Oklahoma State 90-82 in the opening round.

Head coach Tammi Reiss continues to lead the program’s resurgence. Earlier this season she became URI’s all-time winningest coach and the fastest in program history to reach 100 victories. Reiss was also named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the third time and is a finalist for the Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year award.

Freshman Vanessa Harris was named Atlantic 10 Sixth Woman of the Year.

Rhode Island also made program history in the conference’s postseason awards, earning recognition in every category — including First Team, Second Team, Third Team, Defensive Team, Rookie Team and Academic Team.

The Rams will learn their NCAA Tournament matchup during the 2026 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Selection Show, airing March 15 at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
