Police at the University of Rhode Island are warni Police at the University of Rhode Island are warning students and staff after two suspected voyeurism incidents were reported in residence hall shower facilities.

According to a Clery Act safety alert issued by URI police, both incidents involved a male suspect who entered dormitory shower areas and allegedly attempted to record male occupants while they were showering.

The first incident was reported around 9:15 p.m. on March 6 in the all-gender bathroom shower area at Browning Hall, police said.

A second incident occurred Monday at about 11:38 p.m. in the men’s bathroom shower area at Butterfield Hall.

“In both incidents, a male was observed attempting to record individuals while they were showering,” campus police said in the alert. Officers responded to both locations, but the suspect fled before police arrived.

Authorities said the suspect attempted to use a cell phone to capture images or video of the victims.

Campus police have increased patrols around residence halls as the investigation continues.

Officials are urging members of the university community to remain alert and report suspicious behavior near bathrooms or shower facilities to residence life staff or police.

Anyone who discovers a suspicious device is advised not to touch it and to contact police immediately.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact URI police at 401-874-4910 or submit an anonymous tip at 401-874-8477.

Police said the warning was issued to raise awareness and help prevent similar incidents while the investigation continues.
