Obituary: Ross Freeman

Longtime Point resident, Ross Freeman of Second Street, Newport, Rhode Island Passed away on September 15, 2023, at Newport Hospital.

Captain Ross served in the United States Army and did three tours of Duty in the Vietnam War. Ross served as a Construction Engineer with the 1331 Combat Engr Unit Command. He earned a Purple Heart, an Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star and Vietnam service Medals. Ross loved his country and after his service actively supported numerous local Veteran groups. He survived both of his parents Ross E. Freeman and Sally Rodgers and his siblings Tucker Freeman and Sally Bogle.

Beyond his commitment to his country Ross was just as committed to those he called friends, and who were a part of his community. He was a selfless and giving person to those who were blessed to know him. He got much joy and fulfillment from meeting all the new families that came through the Naval War College and helping others in his community whenever needed. Ross’ passing is a great loss for his many friends, a great loss for the people on the Point and the Friends of the Waterfront and leaves Newport a greatly diminished place.

Ross’s wishes were to be buried next to his father in Arlington National Cemetery. For those interested in attending his funeral please email Anthony Heverly at ajheverly@gmail.com

A Local gathering will be held at Battery Park on the Point on October 7 at 2pm. All friends are welcome to join. Please bring memories, photos and laughter.

A remembrance book is in the making and needs your stories. Please contribute to this book by emailing cmoy@moyworks.com with a story about Ross.
