This week, Poulsen learned his fate—a 30-year sentence at the Adult Correctional Institution (ACI). Drug Bust Yields Cash, Coke, and Guns:
A tip led Newport’s Narcotics Unit to two residences last week, uncovering a stash of cocaine, cash, and firepower. On November 14, detectives executed search warrants at the homes of Glenda Mendez, 48, and Edgardo Torres, 26. The results? A Sig Sauer 9mm handgun, two loaded magazines, 16 grams of cocaine, and a jaw-dropping $32,750 in suspected drug money. Mendez, of Third Street, was hit with charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and using a firearm in a crime of violence. Torres, of Girard Avenue, faces possession with intent to sell a controlled substance. Cocaine Trafficking Takedown: The long arm of the law reached all the way to Puerto Rico in a months-long investigation into a major drug trafficking ring. Newport detectives and DEA agents busted Martin Lopez Rodriguez, 46, and Freddy Almanzar, 18, in Newport on November 15. The duo was caught red-handed with two kilograms of cocaine—a haul valued at $100,000. Both men are now facing serious charges, including delivery of more than one kilogram of cocaine and conspiracy to distribute. A seasoned public servant with more than three decades of experience, Caruolo is set to take on the role starting Jan. 6, 2025. Caruolo’s public service career began with the Newport Police Department, where he served for 22 years and retired as a lieutenant in 2014. Over the past decade, he has worked as the Director of Public Safety and Community Relations at Salve Regina University, managing a $1.3 million budget and leading a team of 32 public safety professionals. In his new position, Caruolo will provide management support to Newport’s bumbling and unqualified City Manager Colin Kennedy, a well-known opponent of the 1st Amendment and a free press. Caruolo’s role will include overseeing daily operations and strategic planning across Newport’s city departments. A longtime Aquidneck Island resident, Caruolo has built a reputation as a dedicated leader. While with the Newport Police Department, he commanded the Special Response Team and coordinated emergency plans for major events, earning accolades such as two Chief’s Service Awards, five Meritorious Service Awards, and 31 commendation letters. At Salve Regina, Caruolo was instrumental in fostering stronger relationships between the university and the local community. His leadership shone during the 2019 gas outage when he collaborated with city officials to address the crisis. He also spearheaded initiatives to improve communication and engagement between students and residents and served as president of the Rhode Island College and University Public Safety Association. ✨ Newport: Now vs. 1890! ✨ Take a step back i ✨ Newport: Now vs. 1890! ✨ Take a step back in time with us as today’s view of Newport fades into 1890, right here at the Grand Army of the Republic, Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Congdon Park, located at Broadway and Everett. This powerful tribute by artist William Clarke Noble, who called Newport home in the late 1800s, was erected “in memory of the brave men who fought for their flag, that the nation might live.” The monument’s bronze figures—a soldier and a sailor standing in unity—are set on a towering 8’9” granite pedestal. And here’s a cool bit of local history: Newporters Peter Dennis Melville, an Andersonville survivor, and William Swinburne posed as models for the statue. Even the pedestal has a Rhode Island connection, made from local Westerly red granite, hand-carved by a Newport Stonecutter. The cornerstone of The First Presbyterian Church, which stands behind the statue today, was laid in 1892. The land was given to the congregation as a gift in memory of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Mumford Hammett.  History feels closer than ever! The national average sits at $3.08 per gallon, down two cents from last week, putting it just a dime away from breaking the $3 mark, according to AAA. But as gas prices trend downward, a new hurricane threat in the Gulf of Mexico could bring uncertainty. Andrew Gross, a spokesperson for AAA, warned of potential disruption. “Hurricane Rafael fizzled out, but now we’re facing the possible formation of Hurricane Sara,” he said. “Some of the early tracking models have her heading toward Florida by the middle of next week, so stay tuned.” Supply and Demand at Play Recent data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) suggests mixed conditions. Gasoline demand increased from 8.82 million barrels per day (b/d) to 9.38 million, while domestic gas stocks dropped from 211.3 million barrels to 206.8 million. At the same time, gasoline production rose to an average of 10.3 million barrels per day. Meanwhile, oil prices are edging up slightly, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude closing at $68.43 a barrel after a 31-cent increase on Wednesday. U.S. crude oil inventories grew by 2.1 million barrels, but remain about 4% below the five-year average. Where Gas Prices Stand Across the U.S. The most expensive gas prices are in Hawaii ($4.58), California ($4.48), and Washington ($3.99), while the least expensive are in Oklahoma ($2.59), Mississippi ($2.66), and Texas ($2.68). Electric Vehicle Charging Costs For electric vehicle (EV) owners, the cost of a kilowatt-hour (kWh) at a public charging station holds steady at a national average of 34 cents. Kansas leads with the lowest rate at 21 cents per kWh, while Hawaii tops the list at 56 cents. Post-pandemic, we’ve said goodbye to some legends—Salvation Café, Fifth Element, and (maybe?) Norey’s—but 2025 shows promise, and Broadway is coming back to life. Recently, Fifth Element was sold to @chompri, a local chain known for its burgers and beer. Rumor has it they’re bringing a fantastic menu to Newport! I’ll check out their Warren location soon and let you know if Newport’s going to get its Cheers back. With Fifth Element gone, @calebandbroad has stepped up as a favorite. Owner Rich Willis delivers a lively indoor/outdoor vibe with flavors from New Orleans to the Mediterranean. Their Monday $12 entrees keep it accessible, and the energy is always on point. For an Irish pub fix, @maltonbroadway is a cozy spot with Smithwick’s fish and chips, an incredible burger, and a loaded cocktail menu. Grab a pint or pick from nearly 36 draft beers, but plan ahead—the regulars claim bar seats early every night. Two blocks down, @cornercafenewport has a line out the door for breakfast, brunch, and all-day favorites. Get there early to grab a stack of pancakes, breakfast burritos, or a healthy egg scramble. They’re BYOB, and Thursdays through Saturdays, they serve up a dinner menu and pizza too. I still have hope for @marketonbroadwaynewport. A recent chat with Whitin suggests things may be turning around—fingers crossed that The Market finds its groove. For a fast-casual bite, @scratchnewport is perfect. Known for their grilled cheese and soup combos, mac and cheese, and hearty salads, it’s owned by a local brother-sister duo and is a go-to for lunch or catering.
