A fifth generation Newporter, Christian Winthrop is a former national political campaign consultant turned producer, photographer and blogger.
Christian Winthrop, a native of Newport, Rhode Island, began his career in 1998 as a campaign aide for U.S. Congressman Robert Weygand (RI-2). In 1999, Christian Winthrop joined the Rhode Island State House, serving as an aide to Senate Majority Leader Paul Kelly. The following year, he became finance director for former Lt. Governor Richard Licht’s U.S. Senate campaign.
From 2001 to 2004, Christian Winthrop served as campaign manager for former U.S. Navy SEAL Dave Rogers in two congressional challenges against Rep. Patrick Kennedy. His political career expanded further in 2006 when he became deputy campaign manager for Yonkers Mayor John Spencer in his race against U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton. In 2007, Christian Winthrop was appointed deputy campaign manager for Senator John McCain’s New Hampshire team during McCain’s presidential campaign. Between 2005 and 2011, Winthrop also wrote for numerous members of the U.S. Congress.
In 2008, Christian Winthrop shifted into media and entertainment, joining the Hearst Corporation in New York City as an entertainment producer. During this period, he worked on national television commercials and contributed as a producer to the award-winning documentary Man Under, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2015.
In 2011, Christian Winthrop returned to Newport and launched Newport Buzz, an online news and entertainment platform that rapidly became—and continues to remain—the most widely read news source in Newport County. Through his leadership, Christian Winthrop has built Newport Buzz into a dominant local media brand known for its fast-growing digital audience and trusted community reporting.
