10 ways to go green at this year’s Newport Folk Festival

by Newport Folk Festival

Back by popular demand, Newport Folk Festival has teamed up with our friends at Skedaddle to offer the most fun and affordable way to skip the traffic and save the planet. All Skedaddle routes drop off and pick up directly from the festival, saving time and making your trip easier.

Last year we averaged 1,300 riders each day. That’s 13% of festival goers each day taking a bike instead of a car! Our friends at Spindrift have teamed up with Bike Newport to provide “Park & Bike” lots in Newport and Middletown. Park your car at one of these lots, hop on your bike and follow the Spindrift signs to the new bike parking area at the Festival. Please note bike parking has been moved to the lower parking lot at Fort Adams.

Newport Harbor Shuttle runs continuous service starting at 9 AMbetween Perotti Park and Fort Adams. It’s a 15 minute trip and reservations are not required. More information here.

The Jamestown Newport Ferry runs continuous service to Fort Adams with departures from One East Ferry Wharf in Jamestown and Perotti Park in Newport. Service starts at 8:30 AM and departs every half-hour. More information and tickets here.

SeaStreak offers ferry service between Providence and 39 America’s Cup Ave. in Newport Monday – Saturday. (No Sunday service) More information here.

Save some trees! You can access your ticket barcodes and event information using the Eventbrite app for iOS or Android. The Eventbrite app makes it easy to find your folk tickets that you’ve purchased in one place. From the “Me” tab, you can see details about the event, and show your ticket to scan for entry. Select the event you want from your ticket list. The “Tickets” tab shows your digital ticket barcode, and you can tap “Info” to learn more details about your event (like the location, date, and time).

Stay cool and stay hydrated by frequenting our water stations provided by our friends at Klean Kanteen. And when you do, be sure to use a reusable water bottle to cut down on unnecessary waste. You can bring your own, or you can stop by our Merch tent to pick up an official Newport Folk Klean Kanteen.

Back by popular demand, we will again be offering one free drink token with the purchase of a Newport Folk branded reusable Klean Kanteen stainless steel pint. Purchase your pint at the first token booth outside the main entrance gates from 9:00 AM while supplies last. Please help us reduce waste. Last year’s pints sold out in the first 15 minutes so grab yours early.

We take reducing our footprint seriously. That’s why we require all vendors to use compostable cups and plates. Make sure you dispose of them properly, and enjoy the great food options the festival has to offer.

Make sure your waste ends up the right bin. Brown bins are for compost, blue is for recycling and black goes to the landfill. Certain cups are compostable, not recyclable. Please read all signs carefully and check before you toss! If you have any questions, ask one of our Green Team volunteers on-site. The Green Team is possible with support from our friends at Spindrift.

We’re following the City of Newport’s lead by eliminating single-use plastic bags at our Official Merch Tent this year. So stop by for one of our Newport Folk totes – for sale while supplies last.

Reduce litter at the source. The less you bring in, the less trash you have to pick up. Be respectful and let’s leave the park as we found it.
