Dave Mirra, an icon in the world of BMX biking and one of the most successful athletes in X Games history, was found dead Thursday in his hometown of Greenville, N.C. Police said that the 41-year-old was discovered in his truck with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Mirra was an accomplished BMX rider and one of the most decorated athletes in ESPN’s X Games history, medaling every year from 1995 to 2008 and winning 14 gold medals.

Mirra leaves behind a wife, Lauren Blackwell Mirra, and two daughters.
An Instagram post published to Mirra’s account in the hours before his death included one featuring his wife, Lauren.
