Spencer Lane, a top-tier skater from Barrington, Rhode Island, and his mother, Christine Lane, were identified as two of six members of The Skating Club of Boston aboard American Eagle Flight 5342. All 64 people on the flight perished, along three aboard the U.S. military helicopter it collided with. “Our sport and this club have suffered a horrible loss with this tragedy,” said club CEO Doug Zeghibe. “Skating is a tight-knit community where parents and kids come together six or seven days a week to train and work together. Everyone is like family.” Lane and his fellow club members were returning from U.S. Figure Skating’s National Development Camp in Kansas, which followed the U.S. Championships. “Spencer, in the best way possible, was a crazy kid,” Zeghibe said. “Highly talented, like incredibly talented. He hadn’t been skating very long and rocketed to the top of the sport. Very fun, very cerebral, a good thinker.” Other club members on board included skater Jinna Han of Mansfield, Massachusetts, her mother, Jin, and Russian coaches Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov. The group had planned to catch a connecting flight from Reagan National Airport to Boston on Wednesday night before tragedy struck. As first reported by Newport Buzz, federal immigra As first reported by Newport Buzz, federal immigration agents conducted a targeted operation Wednesday morning, detaining one individual near Thames Street and Cotton Court. Eyewitnesses saw about six armed ICE agents dressed in black masks, black tops, and camouflage pants making the arrest. The City of Newport confirmed the operation, stating, “We can confirm that a targeted federal immigration action did take place earlier today… focused on a single individual rather than a widespread operation.” Officials have not released further details. Following the incident, rumors spread that ICE agents had entered local schools, prompting Superintendent Coleen Burns Jermain to reassure families. “No ICE agents or any federal agents came to our schools or inquired about our students or their families at any time,” she wrote. “None were seen around any of our schools, and all our students were safe.” Concerns arose after Rogers High School students received alarming texts at the end of the day. Administrators, responding to their fears, arranged for them to be transported home in school vans. At Thompson Middle School, parents of high schoolers requested similar arrangements for their younger children, leading to some TMS students also being driven home instead of taking the bus. Jermain emphasized that ICE was never present at any school and there were no disruptions at Pell Elementary. She acknowledged that the dismissal changes, meant to ease fears, inadvertently fueled misinformation. “I know these are difficult and emotional times,” she wrote, apologizing for any distress caused.
