Construction on the Newport Bridge delayed until September 21st

Due to expected heavy rain and winds from Hurricane Jose The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) will delay the start date of the roadway deck repair project on the Newport Pell Bridge. The project was planned to start on Tuesday September, 19th, however with the expected forecast it will now start on Thursday, September 21st. After the morning rush hour crews will begin to work. Traffic will be most significantly impacted during the afternoon rush hour on Thursday, September 21st.

The project is a continuation of the work done in May and June; it consists of partial removal and replacement of the Bridge deck. Due to the delay, beginningSeptember 21, single travel lanes in each direction will be in place. Overwide vehicles with a width exceeding 8 feet 6 inches will be prohibited from crossing the bridge and overweight vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) over 80,000 pounds are also prohibited from crossing.
