May is upon us and it’s time to celebrate OLDER AMERICANS MONTH with the usual flare and exuberance that the community has grown accustomed to from the Edward King House. This year’s theme for Older American’s month is AGE OUT LOUD! The theme strives to give aging a new voice—one that reflects what today older adults is have to say. SENIOR WEEK 2017 is chock a block full of activities and opportunities to engage with each other and our community that one need not go far to find something of interest. SENIOR WEEK in Newport celebrates growing older with events that highlight the needs of today’s older adult. Take a look a look at what Senior Week has to offer this year:
Friday, May 19, 2017 – Newport Navy Choristers Concert
The Newport Navy Choristers, under the direction of Lori McDowell, will present their annual “Proudly We Sing” Concert on Friday, May 19, 2017 at St. Lucy’s Church on 909 West Main Road in Middletown at 7:30pm in celebration of Armed Forces Day. The concert will celebrate the evolution of American music as represented by patriotic and popular songs that are associated with the armed conflicts in which our nation has fought. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children under the age 12. For general information regarding the concert, please contact the Edward King House at 401-846-7426. Monday, May 22, 2017 – Bellevue Stroll
The Bellevue Stroll is an opportunity to encourage health and wellness through walking. The “strollers” meet every Monday and Wednesday at 10am beginning at the Edward King House. The group continues their walk down Bellevue Avenue using the Newport Preservation Society Mansions as their markers to measure how far they can comfortably walk. The Bellevue Stroll group is always looking for new participants and encourages everyone to join them. The Stroll is free and open to the public.
Monday, May 22, 2017 – Hearing Screening
Did you know that you’re struggling to hear might simply be a result of ear wax build up? Join us with our friends from Miracle Ear to have your hearing professionally screened along with an entertaining and yet informative presentation on healthy hearing. The screening will take place at 1pm at the Edward King House and is free to all participants.
Tuesday, May 23, 2017 – Senior Portraits by Joseph Bashour
Professional photographer Joseph Bashour offers his services to the Edward King House again this Spring to produce high quality prints on a black background only. There is a $10 donation requested for a 8 by 10 color print offered to the participant. All proceeds go to benefit the Edward King House. Additional prints may be ordered at further cost. Call the center at 401-846-7426 to set up an appointment between 1 and 4pm. Participants are welcome to invite family and friends to participate as well.
Tuesday, May 23, 2017 – EKH Spring Sing
It’s time for our annual Spring Sing combining our very own EKH Singers with St. Michael’s School Chorus. Join us for a rollicking event that is sure to make you tap your toes and sing along! This event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Ballroom at the Edward King House.
Wednesday, May 24, 2017 – BMI Screening
BMI Screening measures the ratio of an individual’s weight to height and it is used to estimate a person’s risk for of weight-related health problems. Sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI, this event is free and open to the public at the Edward King House at 1pm.
Wednesday, May 24, 2017 – Oldies Night Dinner Dance
The Edward King House will take a trip back in time to celebrate Oldies Night with dinner and dancing from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Delight your taste buds with dinner consisting of an authentic 1960’s menu to include real ice cream sodas and the fare often enjoyed at the local “soda shop” will be provided by Chef Brian from Blenheim Newport. Set your toes a tapping with dancing and music from the 40’s and 50’s sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI. The cost is $10 per person and reservations are a must. Seating is limited. The Ask-A-Lawyer program is designed to provide legal information that empowers older citizens by promoting an understanding of their legal rights and responsibilities in determining their future. This service is provided by the Rhode Island Bar Association. It will be offered from 10am to 11am. The event is free and open to the public.
Thursday, May 25, 2017 – Senior Cinema and Ice Cream Social
Sponsored by Atria Aquidneck Place, this event will pair a delicious ice cream sundae bar with a showing of Wild Oats with Shirley Maclaine and Jessica Lange. The festivities begin at 1pm. Friday, May 26, 2017 – Mayor’s Luncheon and Volunteer Recognition Ceremony

Saturday, May 27, 2017 Everything Must Go Dollarama and Bag Give Away
Come pick up your free City of Newport Shopping Bag and fill it with odds and ends that have been in storage at the Edward King House and need to find a new home. No cost to attend but please leave a donation for whatever odds and ends you may take. This event is open to the public at the Edward King House.
