Expect Delays: Major Road Work Underway Across Aquidneck Island and Tiverton

Drivers on Aquidneck Island and in the Tiverton area should prepare for a series of road improvements and traffic changes over the coming weeks and months.

In Middletown, significant overnight work is underway along Route 138 (East Main Road) North, from Aquidneck Avenue to Mitchell’s Lane at the Middletown/Portsmouth line. Lane shifts will be in effect Sunday through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. In addition, traffic signal work is scheduled at several key intersections along East Main Road — including Aquidneck Avenue, Wyatt Road, Meadow Lane, and Oliphant Lane — Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The project is expected to be completed by spring 2026.

Additional weekday work is planned throughout the region:

* Little Compton: East Main Road, from Simmons Road to Peckham Avenue, and Simmons Road, from Willow Avenue to East Main Road, will see alternating lane closures for drainage and landscaping Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Tiverton: Fish Road, from Beth Road to Bulgarmarsh Road, will have alternating lane closures for driveway apron construction Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
* Tiverton: Route 77 (Main Road), from Central Avenue to Bridgeport Road, will also undergo similar work on Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ongoing work continues on Route 179 in Tiverton from Eight Rod Way to Lake Road. Utility crews are operating behind barriers with frequent vehicle movement in and out of the zone. Delays are possible Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 19.
