The Gilded Age Orchestra of Newport will mark America’s upcoming semiquincentennial with a special program, “Celebrate America 250,” on Thursday, Feb. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the grand ballroom of Rosecliff.
Hosted by The Preservation Society of Newport County, the performance will feature the 30-piece professional Gilded Age Orchestra of Newport under the direction of conductors Christopher Brellochs and Mark Stickney.
The evening’s program traces Newport’s musical heritage from the era of the American Revolution through the early 20th century, highlighting how the city’s cultural life evolved alongside the nation itself. Among the notable selections is the first musical work performed for the American Centennial in Newport, played in Washington Square on July 4, 1876. The concert will also include works by European composers who wrote music inspired by and celebrating America.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for a pre-concert reception, giving attendees time to gather before the performance begins in one of Newport’s most iconic Gilded Age settings. Rosecliff is located at 548 Bellevue Ave.
