The Internal Revenue Service is pushing back the deadline for the tax filing season about one month from April 15 to May 17 according to reports from CNBC, Bloomberg, NBC News, The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.
April 15 tax deadline will be May 17, per statement from Reps. Neal and Pascrell.

🚨 Yesterday @RepRaskin and I led over 100 members demanding the IRS give Americans flexibility and extend the tax-filing deadline.
Today the IRS complied and moved the deadline to May 17. https://t.co/Fyy9QnKe3e

The deadline gives taxpayers and the IRS more time to process tax returns. The extension applies only to federal income taxes, not state income taxes. If individual states don’t change their deadlines, that means that filers in those states may need to file by April 15 anyway, unless they file for an automatic extension.
Last year, the IRS moved its deadline to July 15 due to the Covid the pandemic.
