Drivers across the U.S. may soon see gas prices di Drivers across the U.S. may soon see gas prices dip below $3 a gallon for the first time since 2021. The national average sits at $3.08 per gallon, down two cents from last week, putting it just a dime away from breaking the $3 mark, according to AAA. But as gas prices trend downward, a new hurricane threat in the Gulf of Mexico could bring uncertainty. Andrew Gross, a spokesperson for AAA, warned of potential disruption. “Hurricane Rafael fizzled out, but now we’re facing the possible formation of Hurricane Sara,” he said. “Some of the early tracking models have her heading toward Florida by the middle of next week, so stay tuned.” Supply and Demand at Play Recent data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) suggests mixed conditions. Gasoline demand increased from 8.82 million barrels per day (b/d) to 9.38 million, while domestic gas stocks dropped from 211.3 million barrels to 206.8 million. At the same time, gasoline production rose to an average of 10.3 million barrels per day. Meanwhile, oil prices are edging up slightly, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude closing at $68.43 a barrel after a 31-cent increase on Wednesday. U.S. crude oil inventories grew by 2.1 million barrels, but remain about 4% below the five-year average. Where Gas Prices Stand Across the U.S. The most expensive gas prices are in Hawaii ($4.58), California ($4.48), and Washington ($3.99), while the least expensive are in Oklahoma ($2.59), Mississippi ($2.66), and Texas ($2.68). Electric Vehicle Charging Costs For electric vehicle (EV) owners, the cost of a kilowatt-hour (kWh) at a public charging station holds steady at a national average of 34 cents. Kansas leads with the lowest rate at 21 cents per kWh, while Hawaii tops the list at 56 cents. Post-pandemic, we’ve said goodbye to some legends—Salvation Café, Fifth Element, and (maybe?) Norey’s—but 2025 shows promise, and Broadway is coming back to life. Recently, Fifth Element was sold to @chompri, a local chain known for its burgers and beer. Rumor has it they’re bringing a fantastic menu to Newport! I’ll check out their Warren location soon and let you know if Newport’s going to get its Cheers back. With Fifth Element gone, @calebandbroad has stepped up as a favorite. Owner Rich Willis delivers a lively indoor/outdoor vibe with flavors from New Orleans to the Mediterranean. Their Monday $12 entrees keep it accessible, and the energy is always on point. For an Irish pub fix, @maltonbroadway is a cozy spot with Smithwick’s fish and chips, an incredible burger, and a loaded cocktail menu. Grab a pint or pick from nearly 36 draft beers, but plan ahead—the regulars claim bar seats early every night. Two blocks down, @cornercafenewport has a line out the door for breakfast, brunch, and all-day favorites. Get there early to grab a stack of pancakes, breakfast burritos, or a healthy egg scramble. They’re BYOB, and Thursdays through Saturdays, they serve up a dinner menu and pizza too. I still have hope for @marketonbroadwaynewport. It started as a hit under @pour_judgement’s Hank Whitin and @calebandbroad’s Rich Willis, but too many changes disrupted its charm. A recent chat with Whitin suggests things may be turning around—fingers crossed that The Market finds its groove. For a fast-casual bite, @scratchnewport is perfect. Known for their grilled cheese and soup combos, mac and cheese, and hearty salads, it’s owned by a local brother-sister duo and is a go-to for lunch or catering. For the first time in over 20 years, the “Holida For the first time in over 20 years, the “Holidays at the Newport Mansions” will feature Chateau-sur-Mer decorated for the season and open for tours, along with The Breakers, Marble House, and The Elms. These landmark Gilded Age homes will showcase nearly 30 Christmas trees, each decorated to complement the unique décor and theme of its room. The holiday decorations include a profusion of ornaments, poinsettias, garlands, wreaths, fresh floral arrangements, and more. A 15-foot poinsettia tree, crafted from 150 poinsettia plants, graces the Great Hall of The Breakers, creating a perfect photo opportunity. Guests can also find a mailbox for letters to Santa Claus in The Breakers Welcome Center. Additionally, the gift shops at The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms, and Chateau-sur-Mer will be stocked for holiday shopping. The “Holidays at the Newport Mansions” event runs from Nov 22 through Jan 1. Note that Chateau-sur-Mer and The Elms will be open only for part of this period, so visitors should check the operating schedule at newportmansions.org. Rosecliff will also be open but not decorated. In addition, for the fifth consecutive year, the “Sparkling Lights at The Breakers” event will dazzle visitors along a half-mile outdoor path illuminated with hundreds of thousands of colorful lights. This year’s display features a new 60-foot lighted tunnel and a fountain-inspired light installation. Holiday music will fill the air, and fire pits on the back terrace and at The Breakers Welcome Center invite guests to warm up and enjoy holiday treats and adult beverages, available for purchase. Admission to Sparkling Lights at The Breakers requires a special ticket with a specific date and entry time, which also includes interior access to The Breakers during the same visit. 🚨 Tyrese Poulsen, 22, of Newport, pleaded guilt 🚨 Tyrese Poulsen, 22, of Newport, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Wednesday in connection with the fatal stabbing of 22-year-old Maximus Julian of Little Compton. The plea came just moments before jury selection was set to begin for the trial. Poulsen had been initially charged with murder in the 2021 incident. The incident occurred at a party on Thames Street in Newport, where a dispute between the two men escalated into violence, leaving Julian dead from the stabbing. Initially charged with murder, Poulsen fled Rhode Island shortly after the crime, but was apprehended a short time later following a manhunt by the Newport Police Department. Poulsen was represented by defense attorneys Angela Lawless and Noah Kilroy, while the case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Eric Batista. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Poulsen was sentenced to 30 years in prison at the Adult Correctional Institute in Cranston, with credit for time served since his arrest in June 2021. Maximus Julian, a business student in his final semester at the University of Rhode Island, was set to graduate with high honors. Outside of his academic pursuits, Julian was passionate about BMX riding, fishing, and worked on a commercial fishing boat out of Sakonnet Point in Little Compton. He was described as a bright, loving young man who was full of generosity and life. The plea brings an end to the criminal proceedings but offers little solace to a family still mourning the loss of a promising young man taken far too soon. #newportri #rhodeisland #newportbuzz

🇺🇸✨ On Sunday, Nov. 10, Cappy’s Hillside 🇺🇸✨ On Sunday, Nov. 10, Cappy’s Hillside Café transformed into a tribute to the U.S. Marine Corps’ 249th birthday, filled with Marines, veterans, and friends honoring their legacy. Charlie Masterson, who’s organized this event for over seven years, led the gathering, taking the torch from Pat Shea and Buzz Riley, who was present with saber in hand. Masterson recognized fellow Marines, including Riley and Teddy Hetland, and thanked Cappy’s owners, Brian and Debbie Arnold, for creating a gathering space that, as he joked, “becomes Tun Tavern” every Nov. 10—a nod to the historical birthplace of the Marine Corps in 1775. Newport AOH Pipes and Drums’ Matt Moore filled the café with Amazing Grace, as Masterson led a roll call of remembrance for the Rhode Island Nine and others who gave their lives, along with loved ones like George Almy Thurston Jr., Sam Ripa, Joseph Decosta, Kenneth Eggerman, and Tom Kenney. A highlight of the event was the cake-cutting ceremony led by 94-year-old Marine veteran John O’Neill, who served from 1950-52, and 22-year-old Alex Lemus, the youngest Marine in the room. Together, they cut into a cake adorned with the Marine Corps logo using Riley’s saber. A second cake for Veterans Day was sliced by U.S. Navy veteran Pat McAuliffe and U.S. Army veteran John Lalli—both cakes crafted by Audra Lalli of Mad Hatter Bakery. Attendees included Bob Martley, Bruce Cotta, Jim O’Brien, Anthony Marsella, and 93-year-old Airborne vet Mike Christensen.
