Newport Harbormaster Reminds Newport Residents & Visitors To Stay Safe Over 4th Of July Weekend

Fourth of July weekend is a time for fireworks, barbeques, boating, friends and family, and of course celebrating Independence Day. Amongst all of the fun, especially on the water, the Newport Harbormaster would like to remind all who are enjoying the Fourth of July festivities this weekend to stay safe.

Fireworks in Newport will take place on Monday night, July 4th , and will be shot off from the North tip of Fort Adams. Boaters are invited to anchor their boat West of Goat Island outside of the harbor channel, but are urged to be aware of the 700 foot security zone surrounding Fort Adams. The Harbormaster will have four patrol boats around the Harbor, and will also be accompanied by the Coast Guard. For any information regarding safety and security updates, the Harbormaster will be responding on VHF Channel 16

The Harbormaster would also like to remind boaters that they are required to have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket on board for every passenger on their boat, and to test their navigation lights prior to the night of the fireworks to ensure sure they are functioning properly. After the fireworks are done, please be aware of your speed and your surroundings when navigating back to shore, as it is expected to be extremely busy.

Stay safe and Happy Fourth of July!
