The Newport Police Department will be adding additional patrols this weekend in an effort to ensure that Newporters are able to enjoy a healthy and safe Halloween weekend.
Like other communities, Newport’s public safety team has been responding to a higher than usual volume of calls over the last several weeks, including several occurrences of vandalism and gun-related incidents which are currently under investigation.
The uptick has not gone without notice.
With Halloween falling on a Saturday night this year and COVID-19 cases continuing to rise, Newport Police are also asking residents to do their part by reporting any large gatherings and staying COVID smart by wearing masks, washing hands, and maintaining proper social distance.
In addition to the increased number of uniformed officers expected to be on duty, City zoning officials are also preparing to respond to complaints stemming from large Halloween parties, which have been prohibited by the Rhode Island Department of Health and Governor’s Office.
As a reminder, under regulations announced today, any gathering with more than 10 people may be subject to a $500 fine from the Rhode Island Department of Health and local and state police will be taking notice.
