City of Newport Swears In First Comfort Police K-9: Meet Bo, the Tail-Wagging Recruit

The Newport Police Department just got a whole lot cuddlier.

Bo, a chocolate Labrador Retriever with a heart as big as his paws, was officially sworn in Wednesday night by Mayor Charlie Holder as the department’s first-ever therapy and comfort K-9.

The ceremony took place inside Newport City Hall at 6:30 p.m., drawing a crowd of supporters eager to welcome the four-legged officer to the force.

Bo joins the department’s Community Policing Unit alongside Officer Nick St. Lawrence. Together, they’ll focus on outreach, school visits, and helping community members during stressful situations.

“Bo truly embodies our commitment to community-centered policing,” the department said in a statement. “His wagging tail is more than just cute — it’s a symbol of healing, connection, and comfort.”

Bo was donated by Dame Dogs Labradors in Pascoag and is currently training for his therapy dog certification with local dog trainer Jess Gaes of Petrichor K9. Once certified, Bo will make appearances at local events, visit schools, and offer support during emergencies.

Officials say the long-term plan could include training Bo in explosives detection to assist during major public gatherings.

Though he didn’t bark out an oath, Bo made his presence known with plenty of tail wags and puppy eyes — and maybe a few well-earned belly rubs.

Welcome to the team, Bo.
