Newport city officials, community leaders and committee members will gather tomorrow to celebrate the designation of Liberty Square as the future site of the Newport Slave Trade Memorial.
The sign unveiling will be held: Thursday, August 23rd at 4:00 pm in Liberty Square with a reception immediately following at the Redwood Library & Athenaeum.
The Liberty Square site was declared by unanimous vote of the Newport City Council in June of 2017. The Newport Port Marker Project Committee was formed in the fall of 2016 with the mission to honor and commemorate the contributions of those Africans who perished in the middle passage journey and to acknowledge those survivors who helped build Newport and the Nation both economically and culturally.
