UPDATE: the fireworks will now be on July 2nd.
For the first time in recent memory, the City of Newport’s 4th of July Fireworks Celebration will in fact not be on July 4th. This year, due to scheduling conflicts with the vendor, they will take place on Saturday, July 13th.
According to the official docket of the Newport City Council, the council will vote on Action Item #5852/19 – RE: Award of Bid # 19-040 – July 04th Fireworks Display to be held on July 13th.
Not gonna lie, this is pretty bad.
That deafening scream you hear is coming from all of the brides who booked their wedding a couple years ago and paid a premium hoping for a fireworks celebration in the middle of their wedding receptions. The other noise you hear is coming from our local bars, restaurants and merchants who are now faced with losing out on a super busy Thursday, July 4th for Saturday, July 13th that would have been busy anyway.
The big question here is, will the local businesses and citizens that financially support the fireworks still be willing to kick in for a July 13th display?

To be fair. Let’s not pretend Newport isn’t going to be dead because we’re not having fireworks on July 4th. We’ll be busy and we’ll all still have a fun Independence Day weekend.
And Robb Report just named Newport one of the best places in world to visit this summer . So we have that going for us. Which is nice.
