Representative Joseph Shekarchi of Warwick has introduced a bill to the Rhode Island General Assembly to ban smoking on all public beaches in Rhode Island. Shekarchi told the Associated Press that he was proposing the bill in response to a large number of cigarette butts left at Conimicut Point in Warwick.
The bill calls for fines of up to $1000 for violators and would allow judges to impose community service.
Last spring Newport’s City Council voted to ban smoking at all public beaches and on Newport’s famed Cliff Walk. You can read our take on that ordinance HERE.
