Robert M. Murphy, 90, of Newport, RI, died Monday, August 3, 2015 at Forest Farm Health Care Center in Middletown, RI.
He was the husband of the late Margaret M. “Chickie” (Bennett) Murphy.
Born on November 25, 1924 in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late Michael and Julia Murphy.
Bob was a lifelong resident of Newport, RI. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He began his long career with the Newport Police Department, retiring as a Detective Sargent. After retiring from the police department, he went to work for Bank of Newport in the mail room.
Bob was a member of the US Navy World War II Veteran’s Association, the Police Commission Officers Union, the Newport Fraternal Order of Police, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fraternal Order of Hibernians. He received his Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Salve Regina University. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years and a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church. He loved traveling with his wife, Chickie, playing cards, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and his daily drives around the Ocean Drive. Bob had a great sense of humor and loved nothing more than his time spent with his family with the exception of his favorite baseball team the Red Sox’s.
He is survived by his children, Kathleen Rubel and her husband Joseph, Joanne Rouse and her husband Alfred, Christine Farrar and her husband James, Stephen Murphy and his wife Doreen, Michael Murphy and his wife Maria and Robert Murphy and his wife Lisa, and his grandchildren, Megan Mahle and her husband Jesse, Jillian and Kerrianne Rouse, Julia, Joseph and Christopher Rubel, Tyler Cohen and her husband Alex and Nichole Murphy, Sarah and Christopher Murphy and Rowan, Nathan and Shannon Farrar. He is also survived by his great grandson, Grayson Mahle.
He was the brother of the late Mary Murphy Powers and John “Bud” Murphy
Calling hours will be held on Friday August 7, 2015, from 4-7 pm, in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
His funeral will be held on Saturday August 8, 2015, at 9am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am, in St. Joseph’s Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport, RI.
Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown.
