RIP James Kivlehan

James P. “Jim” Kivlehan, 80, of Chapel Street, Newport, died Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at the Grand Islander Center in Middletown, RI. He was the husband of Rosemary L. (Cain) Kardel Kivlehan.

Born in Newport on September 11, 1935. He was a son of the late Edward T. and Mary E. (Greenman) Kivlehan.

Jim attended local Newport Schools and graduated from Rogers High School. After high school he studied in the seminary. Later he served in the Korean War with the United States Army. Jim served as a Police Officer at the Newport Naval Base for fifteen years, retiring in 2001.

He was a member of the Newport V.F.W., the Dennis E. Collins, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Newport Lodge of Elks, and Fraternal Order of Police Association.

Besides his wife, he leaves his step children, Susan Gustaitis and her husband Brian of Wakefield, RI, Charlotte Greene and her husband James of CA, Michael Kardel and his wife Que of PA, Joan Kardel of Middletown, RI, Patricia Arroyo and her husband Jose of Newport and Elizabeth Nelson and her companion Richard Jenkins of Middletown.

His sister Barbara Romack of VA, his brother Edward Kivlehan of IL. Several step grandchildren and great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was the step father of the late Ronald F. “Ron” Kardel and brother of the late Walter, Anthony, Joseph and Michael J.T. Kivlehan and Mary Vickers.

Visiting hours will be from 4-6 pm in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, Friday, November 20, 2015.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 21, 2014 at St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street, Newport at 9 am. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Jim’s memory to the James L. Maher Center, 120 Hillside Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
