Stop & Shop unions go on strike: More than 200 stores affected across New England

Stop & Shop union workers walked off the job on Thursday at 1pm amid an ongoing contract dispute with the company.

31,000 members of the United Food & Commercial Workers Union are on strike affecting 134 stores in Massachusetts, 92 stores in Connecticut and 27 Rhode Island stores.

“Given that negotiations with assistance of the federal mediators are continuing, we are disappointed that the UFCW chose to order a work stoppage in an attempt to disrupt service at our stores,” Stop & Shop spokeswoman Jennifer Brogan said in a statement. The company said it had “contingency plans in place to minimize disruption.”
