Sturgill grew up moving around the state of Kentucky and after graduating from college, joined the Navy for three years. Following that he moved to Japan and then back to Kentucky. Throughout his traveling the world, his passion for music became even greater. Sturgill says he developed inspiration from religious and historical books he has read. “I think there is a lot of room in country music for progression and sonic oscillation, which is what I wanted to explore,” says Sturgill.
Some say Sturgill is the savior of traditional country music. “I’m just trying to save myself,” he says.
The 2018 Newport Folk Festival will return to Fort Adams in Newport, RI from July 27 – 29.
