A known MS-13 gang member with a history of fentan A known MS-13 gang member with a history of fentanyl trafficking was arrested Sunday morning in Providence, and instead of praise for the capture, a Rhode Island state lawmaker unleashed a profanity-laced tirade against federal agents.

Federal immigration authorities arrested 27-year-old Ivan Rene Mendoza Meza, a Honduran national, on Alverson Street. Mendoza, who has admitted to being a member of the notoriously violent MS-13 gang, was previously arrested on three fentanyl trafficking charges in Rhode Island in 2023. Despite the serious charges, and a detainer request from federal officials, Mendoza was released back into the community after posting a $50,000 bond.

Rhode Island’s 6th District Court declined to honor the immigration detainer, citing state policy that requires a court order for such holds — effectively freeing a self-described gang member with a fentanyl rap sheet to walk the streets again.

That decision forced federal agents to track him down and arrest him at large in a residential neighborhood.

But rather than concern over the presence of a violent gang member in the community, Democratic State Rep. Enrique Sanchez took to social media to blast the agents who carried out the arrest — calling them “Nazi Gestapo ICE thugs” and accusing them of “terrorism.”

“They kidnapped another of our neighbor in Providence this morning. This time on Alverson St,” Sanchez wrote. “They damaged a couple cars that belonged to residents as well… I am tired of this shit.”

Sanchez made no mention of Mendoza’s gang ties, criminal history, or fentanyl trafficking charges — focusing instead on criticizing law enforcement.

The arrest and political response have once again exposed the deep rift in Rhode Island over immigration enforcement, as a dangerous gang member slipped through the cracks of the state’s legal system and a sitting lawmaker responded with vitriol toward those trying to bring him in.

Break out the fans, crank the A/C, and cancel that Break out the fans, crank the A/C, and cancel that midday jog — the dog days of summer are coming in hot.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for much of southern New England — except for the Berkshires, southern Connecticut, Cape Cod, and the Islands — from 11 a.m. today through 7 p.m. Thursday, warning of heat index values soaring up to 100 degrees.

Translation? It’s going to feel like you’re walking through soup.

This scorcher of a stretch could spell trouble for anyone not taking precautions. Heat illness is a real risk, especially for older adults, kids, and folks working or exercising outside.

Officials are urging everyone to hydrate like it’s your job, stay indoors with air conditioning if possible, and check in on the vulnerable — including your grandparents, your neighbors, and yes, even your pets.

And if you’re thinking about doing yard work or squeezing in a sweat session under the sun? Don’t. Limit outdoor activity to the cooler hours of the day — or better yet, take the day off and park yourself in front of a fan with a popsicle.

It’s hot, it’s humid, and it’s not letting up until Thursday night. Stay cool, New England.

Fifth Warders gathered at Schanil Hall on June 28 Fifth Warders gathered at Schanil Hall on June 28 for Gooseberry Beach’s annual Cocktail Party. The beach was founded on July 12, 1952, when a group led by Luke Curren, John Phelan, Andrew Healy, and Paskle Flack negotiated the purchase of the property from the trustees of Newport Hospital for $10,000.

Jonathan Brown Henry-Heywood did a stellar job organizing the evening, which featured food by McGrath Clambakes and music by Anita Mansfield. Dan Vara and Jamie McGlone mingled with Molly McGregor and Harle Tinney. Nearby, 5W queens Roni Mahoney, Kitchie Chestnut, and Regina Jones held court. On the deck, Harry Livingston and David Curtis chatted while Lisa Sicilian caught up with her former boss, Paul Fleming. Kelley Coen was enjoying herself after a triumphant night of fundraising for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County.

Gift baskets lined one wall, drawing plenty of raffle tickets. A wrapped “mystery box” garnered particular interest—leave it to Jason Heywood to come up with such a clever idea! Lisa Bell contributed a set of her signature candles, while Cathy Moore and Clare Garcia created an “everything basket.” Moore was especially excited to win a curated collection of summer entertaining plates donated by Dottie Berube. Meanwhile, Harle Tinney walked away with a Fourth of July basket crafted by Marnie Winters, one of the Fifth Ward Ya Ya’s. Fellow Ya Ya Renie Sullivan was also in attendance.

Tina Chase was thrilled to win a painting of Keep Off Rock. She sat with her sisters Eileen Roberts and Tina Segerson. Schanil Hall is named after their father, Charlie, a founding member of Gooseberry Beach who conceived the idea of building a community hall in 1967—a space for members to hold meetings, host celebrations, and generate revenue to support the beach. The sisters were delighted to see Billy Connerton at the party and thanked him for installing plaques on the hall bearing their maiden name.
