The Powerball lottery jackpot climbed to $1.5 billion on Tuesday, making it the largest-ever U.S. lottery prize as well as the world’s biggest potential jackpot for a single winner, according to lottery officials.
The cash value is $930 million.
Powerball is sold in 44 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. No players have correctly selected the six numbers required to win the jackpot in the last 19 drawings dating back to Nov. 11.
Due to heavy sales, lottery officials expect the jackpot to increase even further before Wednesday night’s drawing. A $2 ticket has a one in 292.2 million chance of winning the grand prize.
If a Newporter wins and takes the $930 million cash payout, they’ll only be the 3rd wealthiest person in town behind sisters Happy Van Beuren and Dodo Hamilton whom Forbes estimates as having net worths of $1.1 billion and $1 billion respectively.
It’s also worth noting that Larry Ellison owns a home here in Newport, RI and he’s worth $43.9 billion, so technically you’d be 4th wealthiest.
Oh well, you can’t win em all!
But if you do win, perhaps you’d like to buy one of the 10 Most Expensive Homes for Sale in Newport, RI.
