October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a worldwide observance that focuses on the disease, raising funds for crucial research, and providing support to those who are affected.
To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Newport Hospital is offering free mammograms and breast exams to women who qualify. If you live in Rhode Island, are 40 years old or older, and do not have health insurance that covers annual breast cancer screenings, please call 401-845-1548 by Oct. 9 to schedule an appointment. The exams will take place between 9 a.m. and noon Oct. 13.
Interpreter services will be available, and transportation to the hospital will be provided for those who need it. The free screenings are funded in part by the Mary Brinza Memorial Fund at Newport Hospital.
The American College of Radiology has accredited Newport Hospital as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, one of few in Rhode Island.
One of every eight women in the United States is at risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. Only skin cancer is more common among American women.
