Gene grew up in Massachusetts and graduated from Somerville High School. While attending high school he was an accomplished basketball player. His fondest memory of his scholastic years was playing in the Tech Tourney at the old Boston Garden. Following high school, he enlisted in the army and was stationed at Ft. Myer. He had a lengthy career in the banking industry beginning with Beneficial Finance, then at Newport National Bank. The balance of his career was spent at Citizens Bank as a Vice President. Gene and his wife Arlene, lived for many years on Powell Ave in Newport and later in Middletown, as well as St. Petersburg, Florida. He was a dedicated volunteer with the activities at Cluny School, where all his children attended, and in CYO basketball programs. Gene was a member of the Newport Elks Lodge and The Ancient Order of the Hibernians. In his retirement Gene and his wife took a joint position managing a retirement community in Connecticut, but they eventually returned to Newport where he enjoyed many summers driving the van for the Hyatt Hotel on Goat Island. He later volunteered at the Tennis Hall of Fame, greeting visitors. He was a proud denizen of the “City by the Sea” and took immense pleasure in guiding visitors about town. Gene’s greatest joy was found with his family, his wife Arlene, his children, but most of all his grandchildren. He was happiest amongst them teasing and playing.
