RIP Marjorie “Peg” Gillis

Marjorie “Peg” (Burgess) Gillis, 90, of Newport died Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at home surrounded by her family.

She was the wife of Raymond Gillis.

Peg was born on May 23, 1925, to the late Jessie and Sarah (Horrocks) Burgess.

She was a life-long resident of Newport who worked for the Federal Government for 32 years, beginning right after graduation from Rogers High School. Peg enjoyed traveling, was an avid league bowler, and watched the Patriots, Red Sox and golf. She was a warm, generous woman who gave to many charities, and will be missed by many friends and loved ones.

Besides her husband of 69 years, Peg leaves behind her children, Marjorie Gillis of North Providence, RI and Debra Perry of Newport, RI, her grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Jaclyn, Michael and Joshua and her great grandchildren, Jera, Hannah, Jakob, Phoenix, Reece and Jack, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 13, 2016, between 4 and 7 in Hambly Funeral Home, “Brick House”, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, RI.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at 11:00 in Hambly Funeral Home, “Brick House”, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, RI.

Burial will follow in Newport Memorial Park, 30 Howland Avenue, Middletown.

Donations in her memory may be made to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
